Virtualization and Services
While I have written recently about VMWare from an implementation perspective, this is an interesting article from one of this summer’s McKinsey Quarterly newsletters that nicely sums up why CIOs are looking to server virtualization and software services in particular to get more bang for their ever-decreasing bucks.

Virtualization is great, but there are performance hits. I recently worked on a system using Java on a vmware server and performance was less than desired. A lot less…

It is true that virtualization can come with performance hits. For example, at a former employer they had to move some of their systems back on to decdicated boxes because the VMWare was getting too bogged down. But for a site like mine, a small LAMP environment (I even have Oracle shut down for now), the performance is quite good.

Exactly – I’m looking at creating a vmware lamp server this week for pre-production staging. It’s a good option vs. having to requisition equipment, etc., esp. in a low volume testing environment.
