Can’t Push a CLOB

Filed under: Technology — Christopher Murray @ 9:21 am

For those who dwell in the depths of Oracle … it appears that you cannot transfer data over a dblink when that data includes a CLOB. This seems like a pretty big limitation, especially in a data warehousing environment. Perhaps 10g corrects for this. (I should note, however, that there are tools and workarounds to push the data, but simply copying from one database to another as with other tables and structures does not work.)

Rural Sourcing

Filed under: Technology — Christopher Murray @ 11:03 pm

I read something about this several months ago and found it very encouraging, having personally laid off many individuals and transfered an entire organizational infrastructure to India … When you send work to another country, you not only displace American jobs, you also displace our intellectual ability to compete. Besides the simpler commute, lack of language and cultural barriers, and more amenable time zones, this alternative is cost-effective and better for our economy … also just feels right.

Flex

Another interesting development from our pals at Adobe and Macromedia … looks pretty promising … could also solve the state persistence issue … does require, however, using Flash in place of a browser … Not a big deal …

Stagnation?

You know, I can see why monopoly can be a frightful thing … but when it’s Adobe building the monopoly, I’m gonna give them the benefit of the doubt …

The Patience of Persistance

AJAX is new to me. My colleague Bill Hall keeps abreast of developments well and has been proding me to learn more about this … This article gets my blood pumping …
Like many others … I’m waiting for the ‘thin client’ to ride in on a white horse …

The Great White Churbuck

Filed under: Personal — Christopher Murray @ 10:48 pm

I stumbled upon David Churbuck’s blog and Bio this weekend. Fastinacting character, in real life and in print. I was especially encouraged by his blog entry just prior to starting his job at CXO. He was lamenting not being able to spend much time fishing this past summer, obviously spending long hours with the new challenges; but not regretful in the least. Rather, he was excited about the new gig and made points about why it was such a good place to be.

I feel the same. While I can understand why many people have issues with the states of transition they now experience–and especially for many of them who have been there for many years–I do not carry that baggage. Truly, I am excited and energized. I come in with open eyes and an eagerness to help drive this venture. I especially like that in this particular situation, there is not empty level of management; the managers all report to the GM, which I think is brilliant. This of course can only work when the GM himself is willing to work into the day to day activitives of his groups. But that is exactly the situation here. This keeps the GM on the pulse of his teams, and also provides his teams remarkable access and leadership in overall strategy. Incredibly powerful dynamic.

But now, I feel like I am playing with the big dogs. On a daily basis I humbly work aside people like David, and Art Jahnke and Abbie Lundberg and Janice Brand. The people who make this such a leader in the industry. It really does feel like home.
